Vodafone customers will be able to add bank cards and carry out contactless payments using their mobile phone from Q2 of 2015.

The service by Carta Worldwide, via Vodafone Wallet will be available in European markets on NFC Sims on supported Android devices.

Mark Ritzmann, Head of mCommerce at Vodafone Group said: “The digital wallet just took another step forward. With a few clicks, customers will be able to add payment cards to their Vodafone Wallet and use Android smartphones to pay at contactless terminals.

Jeremy Nicholds, Executive Director Mobile at Visa Europe, said: “This initiative is part of Visa’s strategy to accelerate mobile payments and make it easier for banks to enable their cards to make payments on mobile phones and for consumers to pay in the most secure and convenient way.”

Operator Contactless Payments have a mixed history, O2 Wallet closed exactly a year ago while EE’s cash on tap has secured functionality on London Underground – making it a more popular offering.
