Virgin Media: ready to take on BT

Virgin Media owner Liberty Global has stated it is ready to take on BT in the UK quad-play market.

Virgin Media is confident they can compete with BT following the media giant's decision to enter the quad play space. Virgin Media feels that its ‘good position in the industry’ will hold it in good stead to maintain a strong market position.

Speaking in its latest investor call, Liberty Global said: ‘We are very confident that we have a breadth of proposition to compete very effectively against BT. We’re in a good position in this industry, if you keep an eye on the shifting of operators offering home telephony, we consistently have a good net position compared with BT. It will be a long time until the deal with BT will close and going forward we expect them to continue to be the rational operator as they have been in the past.’

While Virgin Media are ready to take on BT in the quad-play market, it claims it is ‘just getting going’ in the mobile market, aiming for a greater push in mobile growth. Liberty Global’s Q1 results state that Virgin Media added a total of 113,000 post-paid mobile subscribers, but acquired a net loss of 46,000 prepaid mobile subscribers within the first quarter. Liberty Global has stated that Virgin Media will continue with an ‘aggressive product push’ over the next two years.
