Telefónica has entered in a ‘strategic procurement collaboration’ with China Unicom to jointly source 4G smartphones in Europe.
Devices teams from both companies will work together to seek mobile handsets with shared specifications, in a move to ‘deliver richer data services’.
The smartphones will be sourced from Lenovo and TCL in order to achieve important economies of scale across Latin America, China and Europe. Both companies claim that ‘specific consumer propositions and Go-To-Market plans’ will developed to maximise potential in these countries.
The collaboration was described as an ‘important milestone’ by Telefónica and China Unicom, claiming that for Lenovo and TCL, it will be a critical project. The companies explained that the partnership will allow the handset vendors expand their reach, taking advantage of the combined scale and global footprint of the two operators.
The procurement project is the result of joint initiatives between the two operators, including industrial research and product specifications, with the partnership described as the ‘first step in future procurement activities’.
