British Gas plugs into IoT with connected home products

British Gas subsidiary Hive has revealed a new range of connected home products.

The complete connected home platform will include a number of products to enable customers to ‘control their homes’. Hive previously launched the Active Heating thermostat, allowing users to control heating and hot water via a smartphone app.

Hive explained that more products will be coming to market, with the company focusing on ‘fundamental elements’ rather than ‘overloading a product with features’. As well as the connected thermostat, the IoT platform will include plugs, motion sensors, lights and door and window sensors.

Kassir Hussain, director of British Gas Connected Homes, said: ‘In addition to the beautifully redesigned Hive Active Heating thermostat, we’re bringing a range of new features for existing and new customers and we’ve created a family of connected home products that are easy to use, accessible to everyone and genuinely make life easier.’

The new platform marks a further step for the UK into the connected home market, following Panasonic’s plans to launch a complete home networking system. The manufacturer believes that rather than focusing on one IoT device, the industry should be looking at creating a system to connect everything together.
