Argos will allow customers to trade in and receive instant payment for mobile devices over the counter, as part of a new recycling scheme.
The initiative will be rolled out across all of Argos’ 788 UK stores, with the retailer explaining that it stands out from existing recycling schemes that it claims leaves customers waiting weeks for payment.
In partnership with WRAP, the new scheme will allow customers to receive an instant quote for a device, with the option to trade in for an Argos gift card.
The initiative is part of a project led by the UK charity which helps companies implement lifecycle business models. WRAP explained that this business model holds potential in the UK, where it claims two-thirds of surveyed customers would trade their devices in with a reputable retailer.
Amy Whidburn, head of corporate responsibility at Argos, explained that depending on the success of the initiative, the retailer may look to branch out to other electrical items.
She said: ‘As a leading technology retailer we know that our customers are looking for solutions to responsibly dispose of unwanted gadgets when they replace or trade-up devices. Our new scheme in conjunction with WRAP offers them a safe way to do this, in a really convenient location on their local high street or retail park, with the added benefit of receiving a gift card in return immediately.
‘Depending on the response from customers, we may extend the scheme to include other electrical items in the future, such as camera, sat-navs or laptops.’
