Sky reports ‘outstanding growth’ as it readies mobile assault

Sky has announced its end of year results, claiming ‘outstanding growth’ as the company gears up for its move into mobile.

Sky has reported strong results in the UK with a customer base of 12m and churn at 9.8%.

Paolo Pescatore, director of multiplay and video at CCS Insight explained that the company has managed to deliver a good set of results despite competition from new players.

With Sky set to enter the mobile space next year, Pescatore believes that Sky is ‘now well placed to enter other markets’.

He said: ‘This is another strong set of results for Sky, despite increasing competition from rivals in all markets. This is even more significant as key telcos have moved aggressively into its core business.

‘Fundamentally, it underlines the importance of owning a strong portfolio of content across all screens and seeing good uptake across all platforms. Sky is now well placed to grow the business in other markets.

Sky’s entrance in the mobile market has been long anticipated. Last October the company carried out a trial with Vodafone which saw the network offer mobile services to Sky customers. In January 2015, Sky announced it would launching mobile services the following year off the back of an MVNO agreement with O2.

Pescatore added: ‘We still strongly believe that strategically Vodafone and Sky would make the perfect fit, as their assets would strongly complement each other.

‘Scale will also be important and as we move quickly towards multiplay, content will allow telcos to differentiate their offerings beyond price alone.’
