Ofcom has launched an online mobile coverage checker that allows consumers to compare the quality of mobile operator’s coverage across the UK.
An interactive map allows users to assess the reliability of coverage down to 100 square metres through a colour coded system. It was developed using data from the four mobile network operators and from Ofcom’s own network tests.
The regulator said that the coverage checker would be consistently updated based on consumer feedback, further testing from the regulator and mobile operator information.
Steve Unger, Ofcom’s CTO, said: ‘Access to reliable mobile phone coverage used to be a “nice to have”. Now it’s essential to many people’s lives.
‘We believe our map is the most comprehensive tool available to consumers and businesses to check mobile coverage. We’re encouraging people to feed back after using the map, so we can continue to improve its accuracy.’
Ofcom once again reiterated its determination to improve the switching process between mobile providers. Back in July, Ofcom CEO Sharon White said: ‘Mobile has less switching and as a matter of principle that can’t be right.’
