BT boosted by Ofcom’s EE acquisition assessment
Ofcom believes that the competition issues raised by the BT/EE merger can be tackled using the organisations existing powers.
The regulator revealed this stance in its submission to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on the deal.
Ofcom explained that it undertook market reviews periodically every three years in order to ‘determine whether or not the market in question is effectively competitive and, where it is not, to impose appropriate remedies.’
Addressing the issue of competition directly Ofcom said: ‘Many of the competition issues that are potentially raised by the BT/EE merger are either covered by the existing regulatory measures we have taken or fall within the scope of these regulatory powers.’
Reacting to the news BT said: ‘We welcome Ofcom’s submission to the CMA and that they have no major concerns in light of their regulatory powers. We're confident that the acquisition is good for UK consumers and businesses. We look forward to addressing Ofcom's comments.’
