It’s a scream
Orange is to integrate a screaming alarm and a data-wiping tool into selected handsets in a bid to scare off street criminals.
An Orange spokesman confirmed that the service is in the pipeline, although the operator has not yet revealed any further details.
Web reports suggest that the alarm feature will be called 'Synchronica Scream', and will make human screaming sounds when triggered. It will feature together with a data-wiping tool, allowing Orange to remove sensitive information from stolen handsets, in a package available for less than £10 per month.
The new facilities are part of Orange's efforts to combat handset theft and will be offered initially to business users. They are likely to feature on some of Orange's SPV devices aimed at business customers, such as the M6100 (pictured).
The news comes on the back of the Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum's calls that networks should take more responsibility for stolen handsets, making sure that they are blocked within 48 hours of being stolen.
