New names for Nokia
New Nokia models will be given distinct names rather than just four-digit numbers, as the manufacturer bids to make its products more appealing to fashion and image-conscious customers.
The move comes following the success of rival manufacturer Motorola with the RAZR and SLVR handsets and LG's success with the top-selling Chocolate phone. It is unknown whether all new handsets will be given names or if some would still use the four-digit naming system only.
A Nokia spokesman told Mobile that handsets will still be accompanied by a number, with the recently released 8800 Sirocco and 5500 Sport being the first two examples.
Nokia's N-series range is currently enjoying strong sales. However, retail and network handset buyers have complained that the manufacturer is losing in the fashion, prepay and imaging stakes. Nokia is hoping to regain the fashion market with its newly updated L'Amour range, as well as with the 8800 Sirocco.
