Three responds to Ofcom CEO comments

Three has hit back at an article by Sharon White criticising the takeover of O2 by its owners Hutchison Whampoa.

The network said that the newly formed business would enhance the wholesale market which would continue to provide strong competition for mobile consumers.

In a statement Three said: ‘Three UK’s acquisition of O2 will provide the smallest operator with the scale and financial strength to be able to continue to compete aggressively in the market as a focused, pure-play mobile operator against powerful fixed and media convergent operators.

‘The combined business will significantly enhance the wholesale market, offering access to a best-in-market network and enabling a range of better and stronger offers by a range of other providers for consumers.

BT/EE takeover continues to progress

One of the key reasons given by supporters of the Three/O2 deal has been that a lot more financial muscle is needed in order to compete with the combined power of BT and EE.

The deal for the telecoms giant to buy the network operator was granted approval by the Competition and Market’s Authority in January. The newly merged business has now revealed how it will be structured with the EE brand being retained and the company operating a multi-brand strategy.
