Vodafone re-enters talks with Liberty Global

Vodafone has confirmed it is in early discussions with Liberty Global over a joint venture in the Netherlands but says talks will not extend beyond this region.

The joint venture would see Vodafone and the Virgin Media owners incorporate both companies’ local businesses.

This is the second time that Vodafone has entered into talks with Liberty Global, announcing last year that it was in ‘early discussions’ with the Virgin Media owners over the potential exchange over selected assets.

At the time, Liberty Global’s CEO John Malone explained there would be no timeframe on the discussions, giving no mention on which assets would be involved. However these talks were terminated a month later by Vodafone.

Responding to media speculation on the recent discussions, Vodafone said: ‘The discussions are ongoing and do not extend beyond the creation of a joint venture in the Netherlands. There is no certainty as to when or whether any transaction will be agreed.’
