Austrian report spells danger for Three/O2
The decision on whether to approve the acquisition of O2 by Three’s owners Telefonica could be impacted by a report on the Austrian mobile market.
The Telegraph says that the document presents evidence which suggests a similar acquisition which took place in Austria between Three and Orange had a negative impact on the market for the consumer.
There was a rise in prices despite the European regulator forcing the combined entity to sell mobile spectrum to 16 MVNOs.
Since the major meeting between the key stakeholders in the deal and the European Commission took place last Monday [07/03/2016] it’s been suggested that a number of MVNOs will attempt to purchase spectrum should it become available.
TalkTalk, Tesco Mobile and Virgin Media have all been put forward as potential candidates to attempt to challenge the major networks.
