Vodafone’s free roaming takes on Three & Tesco Mobile

Vodafone’s free roaming takes on Three & Tesco Mobile

Vodafone has scrapped roaming charges to over 40 countries.

The network has added all-inclusive roaming to its 12 and 24 pay monthly bundles. This will enable new and existing customers to use up to 4GB of data whilst abroad.

The service puts Vodafone on similar footing to Carphone Warehouse MVNO iD and Three UK, which launched its Feel At Home, initiative in 2013.

Vodafone’s decision follows legislation put forward by the European Parliament on 30th April 2016, forcing operators to slash roaming by 70%. This is in preparation for EU plans to scrap all EU roaming charges by 2017.

This saw Tesco Mobile scrap roaming charges from May to September in a move to get ahead of the upcoming legislation.

According to Sunetra Chakravarti, editor of Mobile Choice, Vodafone’s decision now puts added pressure on EE and O2. She said: ‘Free roaming in 40 countries from Vodafone makes Tesco’s brilliant offer from last week seem a bit pale in comparison and make Three and iD dig deeper for a better consumer proposition.

‘The networks hit the hardest will be EE and O2 as they currently don’t have free roaming with their contracts. However, with EU roaming prices slashed by 75% in the past week, it shouldn’t be long before we hear from them too!’
