Samsung has announced it will offer premium Gear VR content to new S7 and S7 edge customers in Europe.
The bundle of premium virtual reality games and experiences will be offered free to new S7 and S7 edge customers and will include the most popular paid-for content on the Oculus VR Store.
In the UK this will be available at O2, Dixons Carphone and Vodafone with customers also able to buy the Samsung Gear VR headset at a special price.
Strong VR demand
The manufacturer explained that since it unveiled its VR device at this year’s Mobile World Congress, the brand has sold 300,000 handsets across Europe. The Gear VR headset was launched alongside Samsung’s S7 and S7 edge flagship smartphones, which the manufacturer claimed has since received record European demand.
This is in line with the manufacturer latest financial results, where better than expected mobile growth was attributed to the Galaxy S7. Samsung’s success came in the same week that bitter rival Apple saw growth fall for the first time in 13 years.
The Korean manufacturer believes that the demand for VR will only continue, with analyst firm CCS Insight predicting year-on-year VR growth to hit 168% in 2016.
According to Samsung CMO David Lowes, the new content incentive will enable broader VR adoption. He commented: ‘Our Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are performing extremely well, demonstrating continued strong demand for our premium flagship devices.
‘The smartphone is already so fundamental to our lives but connecting it with a product like the Gear VR opens up incredible new experiences that are often as emotional as they are immersive. With this new incentive, we’re encouraging broader VR adoption so that more people can experience this amazing new technology for themselves.’
