TalkTalk’s commercial director John Scouler is to appear at Westminster Magistrate’s Court on 22 September after being charged with fraud, following an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office.
The case relates to two counts of fraud, one for alleged abuse of position and one count of false accounting while in his role of food commercial director at Tesco UK. Also charged were Carl Rogberg, the former finance director of Tesco UK, Christopher Bush, the former managing director of Tesco UK.
It is alleged that the fraud took place between February and September 2014. The SFO investigation began in October of the same year following the supermarket stating that its profits had been overstated by £263m.
John Scouler joined Talktalk in February 2015, having left Tesco in November 2014 after suspended by the company. At the time, TalkTalk told Sky News that “We are very pleased that John will be joining TalkTalk and to have someone with his consumer and retail expertise working for the business as we accelerate our quad-play growth."
Following this week’s news that he is to stand trial over the alleged fraud, TalkTalk told Mobile, “We are aware of the SFO’s announcement, but as this is an on-going investigation unrelated to TalkTalk we cannot comment further.”
