In-store and online retailers are taking pre-orders on the mid-range Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 series, which are available from February 3rd.
Samsung is offering the A3 at £279 and A5 at £369 with a free set of Level Active Bluetooth earphones with an RRP of £79.99 from Samsung, Carphone Warehouse, 02 and Virgin. The earphones must be claimed by redemption from Samsung for pre-orders from Argos, John Lewis and Shop Direct.
Carphone Warehouse is the exclusive retailer of the device in Peach Cloud colour – other colours available are Black Sky, Blue Mist and Gold Sand.
The Galaxy A3 will be available from Carphone Warehouse at no upfront cost from £21.50 per month on EE. There’s also a 2GB data option for an upfront cost of £29.99 at £25.99 per month on EE, which includes unlimited minutes and texts.
The Samsung A5 is available with 3GB data for free on EE for £30.99 per month, and with no upfront cost from £25.50 per month on iD, with 500MB. There’s also an option of 3GB data with no upfront on EE for £30.99 per month.
Carphone Warehouse is offering its Price Promise to any new or upgrading customer, so will match prices and pay the first month’s line rental for free for customers who find a better deal from either O2, Vodafone or EE on a pay monthly or SIM-only plan.
While Vodafone hasn’t yet announced its deals on the Galaxy A3 and A5, EE is offering the Galaxy A3 on a 4G Essential plan with no upfront cost, at £28.49 per month with unlimited texts, 500 minutes and 500Mb data, or the 4GEE plan with no upfront cost, 1 Gb data and unlimited texts and minutes for £30.99. At the top of the range is the 4GEE Max plan with no upfront cost, 7Gb of data, and unlimited minutes and texts at £40.99. The Galaxy A5 is available on tariffs from £33.49 to £45.99.
02’s deals include the A3 at £9.99 upfront, plus £42 for 20Gb data, unlimited texts and minutes; for the A5, the recommended tariff is £9.99 upfront, 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500Mb data for £30.
Virgin’s deals for the A5 start at £19 per month for the device plus £6 for 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 600Mb data, though airtime plan charges increase each year in line with inflation.
Features of the Galaxy A series include a sleek design, IP68 water and dust resistance, microSD support up to 256Gb, and a secure finger print scanner. These are in addition to improvements to its screen size, resolution, camera, and battery capacity.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 has powerful 16Mp rear and front facing cameras, an improved 5.2” screen and an increased battery size at 3,000mAh. All models run Google's Android 6.0 Marshmallow software, offering support for Samsung Pay.
