Former Managing Director of Mobile at TalkTalk Telecom Group, Jeff Dodds, has been appointed Managing Director of Mobile at Virgin Media. The news was released in Virgin Media's Q1 2017 results, which you can find on this link.
Before joining TalkTalk in April 2016, Mr. Dodds was Chief Marketing Officer at Living TV Group Limited since January 2013, and served as the CEO and Executive VP of Tele2 Netherlands from April 2014.
In the Q1 2017 report, Virgin Media states that its rebased growth of two per cent in 2017 was in part due to a 'decline in mobile subscription revenue'.
Mobile subscription revenue declined by 11 per cent on a rebased basis to £96 million in Q1, the report details: “The migration of customers from subsidised handset propositions to our Freestyle offer (comprising split handset/airtime contracts), led to a net reduction in total mobile subscription revenue of £14 million in Q1, as the handset revenue arising from Freestyle is recognised up-front and reported in other revenue,” it says. “This effect is also reflected in lower YoY mobile ARPU.”
The decline in mobile subscription revenue is net of a £3 million increase in revenue driven by growth in our SIM-only subscriber base.
Despite the decline in Mobile, Virgin Media’s Q1 was actually a success. UK cable and TV subscriptions grew with a fastest rate in the last 10 years. In total, it has gotten 65,000 new subscribers, up 36 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2016.
Sky is still ahead, though, with 12.7m total customers in two countries.
