Remote crime device
A network independent service had been devised to quickly Wipe data from stolen phones.
The system, called Remote XT, sends a signal to a handset reported lost or stolen, instantly disabling it and causing it to emit an alarm similar to a scream.
It's being marketed through the independent channel and will be offered to customers at the point of sale from £9.99. Initially, the service is targeted at business customers and will be available on a number of smartphone devices, including several network branded HTC models, Nokia's E and N series handsets and the Sony Ericsson P990i.
The Metropolitan Police Force and the Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum are supporting the technology, which the makers claim will disable a phone within two minutes of it being reported lost or stolen.
However, if the handset is reset is is still possible to reprogramme the phone.
