Targeted advertising to play big role in 2008

2008 will see a leap in the success of targeted mobile advertising, according to a mobile technology expert at Google.

Shannon Maher, engineering site director at the internet giant, spoke to Mobile as a contributor to our ‘Predications for 2008’ feature – which will appear in next weeks edition of the magazine. He said:

‘An exciting point is the efficiency of highly targeted advertisements on mobile devices. When targeted and relevant, advertising is a key piece of information that can greatly improve the user experience. 

‘Our trials have shown that a well targeted search ad for a local product or service is likely to be precisely what the user wants when conducting a search on a mobile device - and is therefore extremely valuable to both user and advertiser.’

Maher also hailed the iPhone for its success in converging a number of key features and commented on the steep improvement of internet browsing capabilities on mobiles made this year.

He expects 2008 to see significant developments in these fields, owing to the increasingly open software that is available.
