Play.com is the latest company to suggest more customers are shopping online for mobile phones.
It also revealed that the average price of its prepay phones was much higher than the low-end devices sold on the high street.
Average selling price was over £65 Pre-Pay and over £170 for sim free phones. The three top selling phones were also surprisingly the high value phones: Sony Ericsson K800i Pre-Pay Mobile Phone, Sony Ericsson W580i Pre-Pay Mobile Phone and Samsung E250 Pre-Pay Mobile Phone.
Online retailers also claim that because of the credit-card process of transactions, they are more effective in curbing box-breaking.
Prepay phones played a major role in the company’s record turnover - £340m in the 12 months leading to the end of January, up a massive £290m from the previous year.
At the company’s peak trading time on December 3 the website processed 700 orders per minute, up from 422 at the same stage last year.
Rapid growth of the internet has triumphed against the slump in high street sales. Stuart Rowe CEO of Play.com said: ’If you are looking for cheaper prices it is easier to look online where you can compare prices within minutes rather then having to walk between shops. I also expect sales growth to continue this year.’
