Android comp opens amid Google-phone rumours

The first mobile handset to be based on the Google-led Android platform took a step closer to becoming a reality when a software design competition for the platform opened last week.

The Android Developer Challenge opened for entries on Friday, and software developers are being encouraged to develop applications for use by members of the Open Handset Alliance.

Individual, team or corporate submissions will be accepted and the challenge will run until 3 March.

Meanwhile, rumours of an announcement about an Android-based Google-phone have been re-ignited following confirmation of the search engine company’s decision to reserve two stands at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.
