Argos fails in Woolies ad challenge

Argos took the prepay battle off the high street when it complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about Woolworth’s claims to have knocked £30 off a Sagem handset.

Argos complained to the ASA about a Woolies advert for a Sagem my401c that claimed ‘£30 off’ the device, indicating that the price had been cut from £79.99 to £49.99.

Argos questioned whether Woolworths had ever sold the phone at the full price of £79.99.

Woolworths responded by providing data from their stock management system that showed the Sagem handset had been on sale at the non-discounted price of £79.99 from 21 January 2007 to 5 March 2007.

The ASA concluded that the '£30 off' claim was genuine, and Argos’ complaint was not upheld.
