Motorola’s sales continue shrinking

Motorola’s mobile sales continued to plummet in the final quarter of last year. The company sales were down 38% in 4Q07 compared to 4Q06. Full year sales in 2007 fell 33% from the previous year. The mobile segment incurred an operating loss of US$ 1.2 billion (£0.62 billion), while the previous year operating earnings were US$ 2.7 billion.

Motorola shipped 40.9 million handsets during the quarter, compared to 46.3 million shipped by Samsung and 30.8 million shipped by Sony Ericsson. The other two manufacturers increased their shipment volumes by 41% and 18% compared to the same quarter in the previous year respectively, while Motorola’s shipments fell by 38%.

The company is looking to concentrate on the video phone market, while Nokia and Sony Ericsson use mobile music as a differentiator for their handsets.
