Orange spends big on prepay

Despite big gains on contract customers, Orange lost nearly 100,000 prepay customers over the course of last year.

The prepay losses would have been much worse if it hadn’t been for an aggressive prepay subsidy strategy in the run up to Christmas.

Orange was widely reckoned to have been at the forefront of what was described as a record December for rock bottom prices on prepay. Orange was highly active in the £10 price bracket.

Industry experts reckon many of these handsets have been box broken Ð when exporters make the most of the rich subsidies and sell them overseas or use them with another Sim card.

Orange said it attracted 40,000 new prepay customers in the final three months, although the operator is known to have pushed hundreds of thousands of prepay phones into the market over December.
