iPhone sales push Apple into top ten manufacturers

IPhone sales have propelled Apple into the top ten of global handset manufacturers for the first time, alongside fellow new entrants RIM and Chinese firm ZTE.

Apple, with a 0.6% share of the market in 2007, has crept into tenth place, while BlackBerry manufacturer RIM and ZTE both secured sixth spot with a 1.2% share of the market, according to figures from research firm Gartner.

Apple, RIM, and ZTE’s position in the table came at the cost of Bird, Benq and Sagem, who all dropped out of the chart.

Nokia remains in pole position, with a 40.4% share of the market, while Motorola was leap-frogged into second place by Samsung, with a 13.4% share.
