Carphone Warehouse today ended its current Sim only deal on its virtual network Talkmobile.
The Simple tariff offered customers up to two Sims with 50 minutes and 50 texts for £6 a month with the first two months free.
Staff told Mobile many customers exploited the tariff’s 30 day cancellation period by ending their contracts in the first two months before they had paid anything.
Some staff admitted pointing out the loophole to customers in order to earn ‘easy commission’ despite bosses dropping the commission from £5 to £2.50 per Sim just after Christmas.
One worker said: ‘I am gutted Carphone are scrapping the offer. It was a quick and easy way to earn commission.
‘Customers love free stuff so once you pointed out they could cancel the contract before the end of the free period they would jump at it.
‘If you persuaded them to take both Sim’s and then cancel one, that was £5 easy commission for us.’
But bosses say the tariff had been a success helping Carphone build up a decent customer base since the company launched its MVNO Talkmobile in October.
A Carphone spokesman said: ‘We have been delighted with the success of Talk Mobile Simple, which has clearly appealed to a broad base of customers and grown our MVNO market share.
‘However, as with any other network, we continually modify and adapt our tariffs in order to meet the evolving needs of our customers.
‘We are committed to Sim only tariffs and will be introducing a new set of Talk Mobile Simple tariffs in April.’
