Connect, the union for professionals in communications, has offered its support to the Vodafone workers made redundant in Newbury.
In an emailed statement to Mobile, the organisation said it is ‘extremely concerned’ about the development. It said:
‘This will, of course, be a worrying time for employees at risk of losing their jobs. At the same time, their colleagues will be seeking reassurance on the impact this will have on them and their working lives.’
Connect pledged to speak to Vodafone to ‘examine the selection process and look for ways of mitigating against these losses.’
The statement added:
‘We would urge the company to ensure that it conducts an immediate and intensive consultation. The consultation must be thorough and fair, and the selection criteria for those to be placed at risk must be conducted to the highest standards of objectivity and transparency.
‘Alongside this we will be supporting our many members who work in Vodafone functions without union recognition through confidential, independent advice and assistance at this stressful time. We have set up a dedicated helpdesk to field queries on 020 8971 6060.’
