Motorola looks to close Birmingham design centre
Motorola is considering closing its design centre, making at least 60 staff redundant. The centre is located in Birmingham, and currently employs 120 people. The company says it wants to reduce the headcount of the design centre by half in order to cut costs, and this would lead to its closure.
The struggling handset manufacturer says it is looking at ways to cut costs in an effort to improve the profitability of the mobile business. All staff at the centre will be put on risk of redundancy, as alternative options, including redeplyment and relocation are considered.
