Network category spot open for Champions League sponsorship

UEFA is inviting brands to bid for the right to sponsor the Champions League following Vodafone’s decision to end its association with the competition.

The operator decided not to renew its deal, which expires in May 2009, after it discovered that it would lose the exclusive rights to show highlights and goals from the competition under the terms of the new proposal.

Maria Bellanca, Vodafone’s head of sponsorship, told Mobile: ‘Under UEFA’s new proposed agreement, we would no longer benefit from the same level of exclusivity within the mobile network category.

‘The new proposal would allow our competitors to benefit and associate their brand with European Champions League sponsorship.’ 

It is not yet known if any of the other mobile operators will fill the position vacated by Vodafone.

The deal would cover the Champions League and Super Cup over the 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. The deadline for interested parties is Monday May 5th.
