Carphone Warehouse rumoured to buy Tiscali
The Carphone Warehouse could be interested in buying Italian broadband operator, Tiscali. Carphone could by the company ‘at the right price’, according to reports.
Tiscali put the business up for sale last week. However, Carphone has reportedly only expressed interest in the UK operations of the company, but Tiscali hasn’t indicated a willingness to split the business up.
If the deal was to go through, this would make Carphone the UK’s biggest broadband service provider and take it into the IPTV business. The acquisition would take Carphone beyond Virgin Media and BT.
Ovum’s Michael Philpott commented: ‘Over the past couple of years Tiscali has been one of the few players to see continued organic growth of its subscriber base and market share. Assuming it gets bought up by one of the other big four players, this will put 85% of the UK broadband market in the control of just four providers: BT, Virgin, Carphone and Sky.’
