MSN launches location-based search

MSN Mobile has launched a location-based search facility for mobile phones.

The company’s mobile internet site - a very similar service to its fixed-line internet site - now offers a search option which tells the user how close they are to the service they are searching for.

The search service uses cell ID technology, which locates the user based on the network towers they connect to.

MSN has partnered with Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange to access this information, which then enables it to deliver location-based results.

Hugh Griffiths, mobile director at MSN, said: ‘It’s a neat way to get directions, maps and weather. You don’t have to download another client for the map.’
