Vodafone: contract market down 10% this year
Vodafone has told its retailers and distributors it expects the contract market to be down by 10% this year compared with last year – which was down 10% from the previous year.
The operator gathered 80 of its indirect channel partners last week at the ‘Mercedes-Benz World’ centre in Surrey to break the grim news.
The conference was hosted by consumer sales director Tom Devine (pictured, above), and indirect chief Nick Birtwistle.
Vodafone reminded its partners that £35 per month bought 300 minutes and 100 texts three years ago. Birtwistle is believed to have told delegates: ‘No-one would have predicted back then that £35 would be associated with the word “unlimited”.’
The reference was made to unlimited text bundles and large voice bundles, where more minutes are given than most consumers end up using.
Other networks have noticed similar patterns. T-Mobile’s publicly quoted figures from February this year showed a similar downturn, with 57,000 contract customers lost in the final quarter of 2007.
