3G version of the Apple iPhone set to launch

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to announce a 3G version of the iPhone on Monday (9 June), during his keynote speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 in San Francisco.

Jobs will deliver his speech at 6pm (BST) at the Apple event primarily used to showcase new software and technologies.

Speculation around the 3G iPhone has been heightened after Carphone Warehouse stopped selling the current iPhone device, and O2 sold out in many stores with depleted stock elsewhere.

O2 said in April – when it reduced the iPhone price from £269 to £169 – that the price cut would only last until 1 June. However, the cost is still set at the reduced rate, and industry experts say the operator is clearing stock before the introduction of a new device.
