Ofcom unveils plans for digital TV switch over
Ofcom has also unveiled proposals for how the spectrum released by the switch from analogue to digital TV can be used.
The spectrum, known as the digital dividend in the UHF band, could be used for services such as mobile broadband, mobile TV or digital TV services.
It is being reported that mobile companies are frontrunners for the spectrum, but Ofcom told Mobile that there is no guarantee they will win the auction. A spokeswoman for Ofcom added: ‘We’re not saying this spectrum is for anything specific.’
Auction for the frequencies will begin in 2009, but nationwide the spectrum will only be released in 2012.
