Ad-funded virtual operator Blyk expands into Europe

Blyk, the ad-funded MVNO for 16-24 year olds, is expanding into Belgium, Germany and Spain, after first launching in the UK.

The European push follows a move from the operator into the Netherlands in January after its UK launch in September 2007.

Blyk now has more than 140,000 UK subscribers, just nine months after launch, and the company’s aim is to attract 200 brands to run campaigns using its network by the end of
the year.

Pekka Ala-Pietilä, co-founder of Blyk and former Nokia executive, said research indicated that young people across Europe were interested in getting free calls and text messages in return for receiving messages from brands.

Ala-Pietilä said: ‘Our success in the UK has proven that Blyk is a youth media that works.’
