Fujitsu staff in Birmingham have lost their battle to stop their jobs moving overseas.
Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe announced last week that after ‘exhaustive consultations’, a final decision had been made to transfer its printed circuit board manufacturing operation to sister company Fujitsu Network Communications in the US.
Last month, staff took strike action against the plans, which are expected to affect 150 employees.
A statement from the company blamed the move on ‘the continuing volatility in demand for products in the global telecommunications market’.
The transfer is scheduled to be completed by 31 December 2008.
Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe’s chief operating officer, Tony Oppenheim, described the decision to move the jobs as ‘extremely difficult’.
He added: ‘We had been informed by the Communication Workers Union of further strike action prior to the announcement, but hope that with the improved redundancy terms now on offer, this can be averted.’
