Telefónica Europe’s R&D VP Mike Short given honorary PhD

Telefónica Europe research and development vice president Mike Short has been granted an honorary doctorate by the University of Staffordshire for services to the mobile industry.

Dr Short was honoured for more than two decades of service to the mobile industry and for his role in promoting GSM worldwide as the last European chairman of the global GSM Association.

Short was the chairman of the GSM World Congress when it first moved to Cannes and was a driving force in founding the prestigious GSM Association Annual Awards.

The citation also included his longstanding chairmanship of the Mobile Data Association and promotion of messaging as well as his diverse career in mobile communications at Cellnet, BT Wireless, O2 and Telefónica Europe.

O2 has a close relationship with Staffordshire University, having recruited graduates and undertaken 3G testing there.

In his acceptance speech, Short acknowledged he was accepting the award on behalf of all the pioneers in the mobile industry, who had helped the transition from analogue to digital cellular communications and the growth towards four billion customers worldwide.
