PhonepayPlus tightens mobile premium rate rules
Mobile premium rate regulator PhonepayPlus has announced that it will bar any subscription service that doesn’t allow customers to stop easily and quickly.
The regulator is attempting to ensure that consumers receive fewer spam text messages, are able to make informed purchasing decisions and can easily
leave subscription services.
The mobile premium-content market generated more than £460m during the past year from content downloads, via shortcodes, participating in TV shows and SMS news alerts becoming increasingly popular.
However, complaints have risen by 108% over the past year. So far this year, the regulator has adjudged 25 mobile services to have breached rules, and has issued fines in excess of £390,000.
