Nokia N96 launch date finally announced

Nokia has confirmed that the N96 will be on sale from 1 October.

The eagerly anticipated follow-up device to the popular N95 was first announced at the Mobile World Congress in February.

The N96 will have a massive 16GB of storage with support for an 8GB secure digital card to increase it to 24GB, more than the 3G iPhone.

The new handset also has a DVB–H tuner for mobile TV plus a 2.8-inch screen. There is support for Flash, MP4 and a five-megapixel camera.

The N96 will be available to buy through 3, Carphone Warehouse, Orange, Phones 4u, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

There is intense pressure on the N96 to repeat the success of its predecessor, the N95, against pressure from the 3G iPhone. Some bloggers have criticised the N96 for failing to have an eight-megapixel camera that top handsets around the time of the launch will feature. There is also currently operator reluctance to plough subsidies into top-end handsets.
