Phones 4u set to outsource 90% of its IT department

Phones 4u is set to outsource 180 of its 200-man IT department to the Indian firm Tata Consultancy.

The 180 jobs will be initially be taken on as Tata employees but some could face the axe as Tata employs the Phones 4u contract into its existing business.

Phones 4u could not comment on the future of the jobs, or whether they would be off-shored, but a spokeswoman said: ‘We want to increase capacity and have better capability through IT.’

The consultancy division is one part of the giant Tata group Indian conglomerate. The consultancy division alone has 110,000 employees across 50 countries, including 5,000 in the UK.

Phones 4u is expected to keep 20 jobs in house, primarily for day-to-day IT functions.

Furthermore, Phones 4u is expected to make 60 head office jobs redundant as it looks to run ‘a more streamlined business’. The jobs are understood to be related to compliance and auditing.

The spokeswoman added: ‘We will try to redeploy those affected as best we can or help them find them employment elsewhere.’

The redundancies and outsourcing are the outcome a broad review of Phones 4u’s back office operation in recent months as the company looks to run more efficiently.
