RIM announces its first-ever BlackBerry Flip phone

RIM has announced the first ever BlackBerry Flip phone for its latest Pearl device, as the manufacturer continues to sharpen its focus on the consumer market.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 has a QWERTY keyboard with an internal and external LCD screen. The device’s main drawback is that it lacks HSDPA, relying on EDGE data speeds to access the internet.

The Flip 8220 appears to be intended as a further foray into the consumer market for BlackBerry.

Mobile reported last month that the Pearl range has already been successful in boosting BlackBerry’s consumer market share. RIM said that consumers bought around 40% of all BlackBerrys sold between March and May this year, up from 29% in that period the year before.

Availability and price details are yet to be confirmed.
