Reding furious about new EU telecoms watchdog funding
EU commissioner for telecoms and media, Viviane Reding was furious at the EU’s decision in funding the new telecoms watchdog with both national and EU money.
European Parliament groups made a decision yesterday on the funding of the new regulator, The Body of European Regulators in Telecoms (BERT).
But Reding argues that the new regulator will lose its independence with funding from national governments.
She said: ‘National financing, in whatever proportion, can only place the new body's credibility into question and opens the possibility for all kinds of administrative uncertainty.’
Details of BERT will be decided on next week, but it will not be the ‘super telecoms regulator’ Reading wanted.
