Retailers hit by Bold shortages
The BlackBerry Bold has been hit by stock shortages in some independent retail stores, after what appears to be unexpected demand.

Many Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u stores are completely out of stock, with others running low and struggling to keep up with demand. Neither Vodafone nor Orange stores appear to have been affected by the problem as yet.

The shortage seems to have been caused by a combination of the manufacturer behind BlackBerry devices, RIM, underestimating demand among consumers. Store staff told Mobile that demand for all BlackBerry devices has risen significantly with both the Bold and previously the Pearl.

Staff said they were disappointed by the number of units arriving in stores, and deliveries were falling short of expectations.

RIM was unavailable for comment, but a Carphone spokeswoman said: ‘We have stock in stores at the moment and there is a big delivery coming in next week. The fact is that it’s a great phone and has been selling really well.’

RIM’s handset buying is traditionally managed through networks, with senior individuals handling the accounts for each network, and are understood to report into senior management at the company’s European or Canadian HQ.

Phones 4u customers were also offered £90 worth of free travel accessories when they upgraded their old BlackBerry handset to a BlackBerry Bold.
