Orange will lure Christmas shoppers with festive packaging
Orange is tempting shoppers to give mobile phones as a cheap Christmas present with a special gift box for all phones costing over £50.
The black boxes are decorated with orange bows and carry the message ‘I am the gift I got for someone I love’ embossed on the side.
Boxes will include phone socks, vouchers for free international calls and free picture messages.
Stores will be sent hundreds of boxes in the coming weeks to coincide with the Christmas store refits from 1 November.
The operator also expects that some shoppers will choose to upgrade to a new contract and pass on the upgraded handset as a gift.
Orange’s head of retail, Sian Doyle, said: ‘It will give us a point of difference over competitors and is something customers want.’
The boxes will only be available at Orange stores. Exclusive handsets include a pink Sony Ericsson W910i and a black Samsung G600, which will both be priced at £100, or will be free on a £15-per-month contract.
Doyle said that, although there are expected to be some cautious Christmas spenders, footfall is likely to increase by 40% in the run-up to the festive season.
On another note, store staff will have new powers to execute customer service issues following a trial in 21 stores in the north-west of England. Staff will be able to carry out on-the-spot billing and tariff changes towards the end of the year.
