40 million femtocell units sold in five years predict analysts
O2 is planning to start a second trial of femtocells at the start of 2009. The operator announced its first test of the technology in February 2008 and said it was committed to bringing out a commercial proposition early next year.
O2 is moving to a new wave of technology testing and customer experience evaluation.
Although the technology is largely unheard of, analyst firm Informa Telecoms and Media predicts that 40 million units will be deployed in the next five years.
Informa also estimates that femtocell technology will allow operators to offload
8% of the traffic on their networks onto fixed-line networks.
