Alliance and Leicester refuses to offer banking facilities to companies in mobile industry

Alliance and Leicester is refusing to offer banking facilities to companies that operate in the mobile industry.

The bank’s decision to turn its back on the industry emerged when a dealer was turned away after he had tried to open a savings account.

The dealer was sent a letter that said: ‘Alliance and Leicester have taken the decision not to offer banking facilities to businesses that operate within the Telecommunications industry.

‘As the nature of your business is a mobile phone retailer and distributor, I regret that we are not able to offer an account to you.’

Alliance and Leicester refused to elaborate, but said: ‘This was a commercial decision and like all banks we regularly review our
target markets.’

The bank is owned by Spanish group Santander, which also owns Abbey.
