3 pushes short-term deals to counter rival operators two-year contracts
3 is pushing short-term contract deals in a bid to counter the two-year contracts by many rival operators.

Both Skypephones – S1 and S2 – along with a low-end Nokia, the 3120, are being heavily promoted on six-month contracts for a monthly fee of £15.

3 said last week that six-month contracts would remain a ‘key strategy’ for it in 2009, after a Christmas push on the deal in stores.

It isn’t the first time 3 has pushed six-month deals, having done the same with refurbished handsets last year.

A 3 spokeswoman said: ‘This offer is a stepping stone for prepay customers into the contract market.’

Other networks are moving away from shorter contracts. O2 stopped offering 12-month contracts in September 2008, in both its direct and indirect channels.
