T-Mobile sees customer base shrink

T-Mobile UK saw its customer base, including Virgin Mobile users, shrink by 3% to 16.79 million in the last quarter of 2008.

The operator’s customer base fell by 16,000 during the quarter. T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom, blamed its UK arm for slow growth over its entire mobile business in Q4 last year.

Deutsche Telekom ended the year with 128.34 million mobile customers – an increase of 6.3% on the same period in 2007.

Net additions in Q4 were 55.3% down on the 3.76 million it reported in the fourth quarter of 2007, to 1.68 million.

T-Mobile performed better overseas, with 9.8% growth reported in the US, and 621,000 new customers in the fourth quarter – although growth was still slow against previous years.

The operator will reveal its full financial results at the end of February.
