Hopes high of Nokia's touch-screen bringing in customers
Nokia’s first touch-screen phone, the 5800, has hit the high street, and many retailers believe it will deliver a much needed catalyst to footfall.
Staff were excited by the relatively low price of the handset, which was available to buy last Friday (30 January) on prepay for £210, and free on £15 per month contracts in Carphone Warehouse, on O2 and Orange.
Meanwhile, Vodafone is giving the 5800 away for free on £20 per month contracts.
One Carphone staff member said: ‘It’s a surprisingly low price point, given the specification.’
The retailers are able to subsidise the new 5800 by offering low prices on 24-month contracts only. Despite this, retail staff said even on shorter contracts, the phone is low priced. One Phones 4u staffer said: ‘Not many of the high-end phones are less than £30 per month, but this one is.’
Retail staff said there has been considerable attention from Nokia customers interested in the manufacturer’s first touch-screen device.
